Learn how to crochet this simple granny square that simulates the cog and wheel concept.
I could not wait to switch gears and share the wheel pattern which can be easily added to an afghan or cardigan pattern.

Special Stitches:
Single Crochet Together (SCTOG)-
A decrease technique in crochet. Insert the hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook). Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, you should have 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull through all three loops on the hook to complete the stitch.
Double Crochet Together (DCTOG)-
A decrease technique in crochet. First yarn over and insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops (leaving 2 loops on the hook). Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, leave 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all three remaining loops on the hook to complete.
Treble Crochet (TRC)-
A decrease technique in crochet. Yarn over the hook twice, insert the hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 4 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on the hook. You will now have 3 loops remaining on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the next two loops on the hook and you will have 2 loops remaining on the hook. Pull through the final 2 loops on the hook to complete the treble crochet stitch.
Treble Crochet Together (TRCTOG)-
A decrease technique in crochet. First yarn over the hook twice and then insert the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop. Work a partial treble crochet by yarning over and pulling through 2 loops twice, leave 2 loops on the hook. Next yarn over twice and insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. You will now have 3 loops on the hook. Finally yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook to complete the stitch.

NOTE:
The pattern calls for switching colors, you will want to crochet around the opposite yarn as you work the pattern. This step will make it easier to pull up a new color.
